The tentative scratch of pencil on paper
may be a rare sound in the contemporary
design studio. But whether with
algorithm-driven pixels or the easy arcs
of a 2B, the designer’s workings-out
hold a fascination. Conjuring something
that will occupy space means moving in
space, if only in two dimensions. A design
happens in the act of sketching and
modelling, a thinking out loud, a reverse
engineering. For Handmade, built on
new and sometimes unlikely creative
partnerships, these workings-out carry
an extra charge. Here, then, is a selection
of this year’s best prep and plotting.
Wallpaper* Handmade is packed with
strokes of genius, and it feels pretty
good to the touch, too. Print on paper
is a craft all its own and the Handmade
issue is our chance to celebrate it
with a special paper selection, of which
this sketchbook is just one element,
all supplied by UPM. All five different
paper stocks, including that used for the
front cover and encompassing matt and
gloss finishes, were carefully selected by
Wallpaper* to provide the perfect look
and feel for each part of the magazine.
