SPACE COPENHAGEN
Designers
Founded in 2005 by Peter Bundgaard Rützou
and Signe Bindslev Henriksen, this Danish
studio covers a spectrum of disciplines,
from interior design to art direction, taking
a holistic and tactile approach. For this
issue, it created a series of ‘back benders’
(page 049), aided by leather expert Sørensen,
with the aim of ‘releasing bodily tension
and blending seamlessly into a modern
environment’. The studio is now working
on a hotel and two restaurants in London’s
Manhattan Loft Gardens development.
SARA RICCIARDI
Designer
Co-founder of Milan-based design studio
La Lattoneria, Ricciardi has a passion for
all things traditional and often works with
Italian artisans to produce her delicate
contemporary creations. For this year’s
Handmade, we partnered her with Culti
Milano to create an ‘olfactory symphony’ of
temple-like scented reed diffusers featuring
small brass and glass columns (page 171). She
is due to embark on a residency programme
at the Villa Lena in Tuscany later this year.
GABRIELLE SHELTON
Sculptor
For this year’s Handmade, Brooklyn-based
artist Shelton has created a ‘flirtatious’,
euphonious sculpture in brass and bronze
tubing (page 188). The kinetic piece actively
entices onlookers to ‘pull it, push it, make
it move’, says Shelton, who founded her
studio in 2000 and produces bespoke pieces,
including library ladders and chessboards.
She is currently cladding the new art deco
Five Leaves eatery in LA in her signature
metallic designs.
JULIEN DOSSENA
Fashion designer
Paco Rabanne’s creative director since
2013, Julien Dossena teamed up with his
long-time collaborators, Belgian practice
Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen,
to create a metallic ‘Curtain of Calm’ (page
172) in keeping with the fashion brand’s
futuristic aesthetic. ‘I wanted to create a
piece of furniture that could act as a shield
from everyday stresses,’ says Dossena,
who is currently working on Paco Rabanne’s
S/S19 collection, to be shown during Paris
Fashion Week in September.
THESEUS CHAN
Designer
Dubbed the ‘godfather of Singapore graphic
design’, Theseus Chan has refined a signature
‘broken’ approach to his practice. For
this year’s Handmade, and his first product
design, he teamed up with Riva 1920
to create a series of intricate, tree-like
bookends (page 186). ‘My objective was to
keep it simple, and use woods that have
medicinal and healing properties,’ he says.
With the next issue of his celebrated Werk
magazine now in the works, Chan continues
to inspire fresh generations of creatives.
MICHAEL HENRIKSEN
Architect
Henriksen is an associate at London’s Coffey
Architects, who teamed up with quartz
specialist Compac to create for us a piece
of ‘miniature’ architecture, a table that
channels the geometry of an ancient Indian
stepwell and cleverly plays with light and
shadow (page 177). It’s ‘a piece of furniture
that is not just about the surface, but the
space within it’, says Henriksen, who is now
busy preparing a competition entry for the
Dubai Expo 2020 UK Pavilion.
