(Grace) #1

ourhodgepodge of decoys, stabbed
our Mojos into the soft mud, and
retreated to the cover, catching our
breath from the long walk.
The afternoon wore on, and we
enjoyed shade and storytelling, but
had yet to see a bird. The thoughts
of the miserable journey back to the
truck began to creep in. Should we
start picking up soon? Or leave our
decoys and gear and never teal hunt
again?! I knew Lane was beginning
to doubt my scouting report. I was
too. Until we heard the wings.
WHOOOOSH!!! The group of 20
sped past us up river. We thought

they were here and gone before
we could grab our guns, but they
banked and came screaming back
toward the spread. They hit the edge
of shooting range, and it was as if
time stopped. Kamikaze feathered
pilots f lipped in mid-air, the blue
patches on their wings shining like
Christmas lights. When they hit 20
yards, we hit the trigger. Game on!
Until almost shooting time, we
were treated to occasional blue-
wing blasts until we were one shy
of a two-man limit. As the sun faded
and decoys were gathered, we excit-
edly recounted the afternoon’s hunt.

The walk back to the truck seemed
much more enjoyable, even with a
little added weight. The textbook
hunt that had unfolded in the most
unlikely of places proved to be the
most memorable of the season by far.

THINKING TWICE

For most, teal season is a nice kickoff
to the year. Success is often decided
by whether the birds are using your
tried-and-true hunting spots. Some-
times though, a little step outside of
the normal routine can offer exciting,
season-making results.
The warming temperatures,
swarming bugs, and short windows
of opportunity can make putting in
extra effort seem like more work
than reward. For a dedicated duck
hunter that’s waited all year to
scratch the itch, however, traveling
the miles, sweating a little, and put-
ting in the time it takes can lead to
some of the most exhilarating, fast-
paced action in waterfowl.
