clubs in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2009.
It also meant no German teams made the final eight
for the first time since 2006.
Tottenham Hotspur were particularly impressive
against Borussia Dortmund. A sparkling second-half
performance at Wembley gave Spurs a 3-0 lead to
take to Germany for the second leg. Dortmund
welcomed backed Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer from
injury for the return but failed to score despite a first-
half onslaught and Harry Kane scored the only goal of
the game for the visitors early in the second half.
Manchester City suffered an early setback against
Schalke, conceding two first-half penalties which were
both converted by Nabil Bentaleb. But they recovered
to win the first leg 3-2 thanks to late goals from Leroy
Sane and Raheem Sterling and then turned on the
style back in Manchester, putting seven past the
Germans – a result that cost Schalke coach Domenico
Tedesco his job.
Liverpool were frustrated in a goalless first leg
against Bayern Munich at Anfield. But Bayern were
comprehensively outplayed back in Munich, with Sadio
Mane outwitting keeper Manuel Neuer to score a
spectacular opening goal. Virgil Van Dijk headed a
second from a corner before Mane added a late third.
Bayern were disappointing, with their goal in Munich
deflected in by Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by Lyon in
their first leg in France and were fortunate to take the
lead in the return leg when Luis Suarez fell after
treading on defender Jason Denayer, Messi converting
the penalty with a nonchalant “Panenka”.
Lyon briefly threatened after Lucas Tousart’s
second-half goal, but Messi responded with yet another
virtuoso performance, scoring a second goal and two
assists as Barcelona ran out 5-1 winners.
Porto came through a tight encounter with Roma,
which went to extra time in Portugal after Moussa
Marega had brought the aggregate scores level at 3-3.
Roma were angry at the VAR
decisions, with Porto awarded
a late penalty when
Alessandro Florenzi was
penalised for dragging
Fernando back as the ball was
fizzed across the goal.
Alex Telles converted from
the spot in the 117th minute,
but a trip on sub Patrik Schick
was ignored by officials.
