  • the capital derby can be seen by the
fans as a test of who best represents
Rome’s chances of usurping the north.
As far back as 1927 the city sought
a club to challenge the north and this
resulted in the merger of three teams
    (Roman, Alba-Audace and Fortitudo)
to form AS Roma. Founded in 1900,
SS Lazio were excluded from this
amalgamation – and so began a
    bitter rivalry between the pair.

Parioli in the city’s northern district, and
Roma took up residence in the working-
class Testaccio neighbourhood, the pair
have shared the Stadio Olimpico since

  1. But calling the same ground home
has done little to foster friendly relations
    between the two.
The intensity of the derby is such that
its history is littered with incidents such as
    Lazio’s Giorgio Chinaglia demanding
his team-mates burn their shirts after
a loss in the 1970s and Sergio Petrelli,
who joined Lazio after playing for
Roma, firing a gun from a balcony
to scare off fans of his former club.
Sadly, it has also led to tragedy,
and in 1979 a Lazio fan died after he
was hit by a flare fired by a Roma fan
at the other end of the stadium.
