Empire Australasia – July 2019

“BAQA!” THAT, AS you surely already
know, is one of the many Klingon swear
words that has been hurled around the
Star Trek universe over the years. But the
Federation is set to get a whole lot saltier,
with actual cussing, as overseen by
Quentin Tarantino for his much
buzzed-about Star Trek film. “Oh yeah!”
he confirms to Empire, when asked if
the in-development movie will feature
standard Earth swearing. “It’s an R-rated
movie. If I do it, it’ll be R-rated.”
The iconic sci-fi series has got ruder
of late, with Discovery dropping a few
S-bombs and even an F-photon-torpedo.
But this project will burst through the
final frontier, becoming the first truly

adults-only film in the series. Many
question marks still remain, though.
Might Tarantino direct, as well as
steering the story? And who exactly is
putting the first draft of the screenplay
together? It’s been reported that writers
Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), Drew
Pearce (Hotel Artemis) and Lindsey Beer
(Godzilla Vs Kong) have all been in talks
with Tarantino and J.J. Abrams. “There’s
a script that exists for it now,” is all
Tarantino will reveal at present. “I need
to weigh in on it, but I haven’t been able
to do that yet.”
One thing is for certain, though:
when he absolutely, positively has to kick
back with a space saga, he accepts no
substitutes. Kill Bill Vol. 1 began with an
old Klingon proverb (“Revenge is a dish
best served cold”) that originates with
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. And
that 1982 tale of mind-melds, nerve-
pinches and chest-revealing spacewear
is still his go-to for a late-night kick.
“I can’t watch it without saying every
single one of Ricardo Montalbán’s lines
as he says it,” Tarantino admits. “It’s
impossible for me to watch Wrath Of
Khan without doing Khan’s dialogue.
I act it all out: ‘AH, YOU STILL
REMEMBER, ADMIRAL!’” Khan
Noonien Singh: the original Bad
Motherfucker. NICK DE SEMLYEN
