A quieter
place
A Quiet Place 2 is confirmed
— what can we expect from
the sequel?
IT’S AN IDEA JOHN
KRASINSKI HAD
FROM THE START
Nobody expected a sequel to A Quiet
Place — least of all its writer-director-
star, John Krasinski. But then it became
the sleeper horror hit of 2018, earning
$340 million worldwide against a reported
$17 million budget. “I have my idea for
[a sequel],” Krasinski told Empire on the
film’s set, back in 2017, way before its
success. The idea, he says, was spurred
by forward-thinking execs at the studio.
“I never wrote it to be anything with
a sequel — and then the studio and the
producers talk to you about it. I have
a really good idea for how to do it, but
growing up with really level-headed
parents, I was brought up to be really
thankful for what you have. If we’re lucky
enough, then I have an idea that I think
Paramount might dig.” Precisely what
that is, well, Krasinski’s staying as hushed
about it as his onscreen heroes.
IT’S EXPANDING
THE WORLD
What we do know is that the sequel will
further explore the world in the wake of
the sound-attacking alien invasion. “I had
this very small idea that I thought would be
interesting,” Krasinski told Empire in late
- “I thought about it for a few
months and then I told Emily [Blunt] the
idea and she said, ‘I think you need to write
the next one.’ I think we underestimated
how rich the world is.” While the first film
kept a tight focus on a single family, the
next will feature new characters
and a wider scope. “Most sequels are
about the return of a villain or a hero.
[With this sequel], we actually have
the world to deal with,” Krasinski
explained to The Playlist. “The world
is the star of the movie. So this set of
circumstances — how the rest of the
world is dealing with this apocalyptic
tragedy — is the fun of it. That’s what
drew me back.”
IT WILL FEATURE THE
ORIGINAL CAST
In spite of this world-
expanding approach, the
first film’s characters are
expected to return. Krasinski is likely to
stay behind the camera, as anyone who’s
seen the original will understand, but his
leading lady (and real-life wife) Emily
Blunt is confirmed to be reprising her role
as Evelyn Abbott, last seen with
a gun in hand ready to take on the
aliens. The actors who played their kids,
Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, are
in talks to return too, according to The
Hollywood Reporter. And with the film
reportedly earning a budget this time,
could this sequel have the potential
to make some noise? JOHN NUGENT
