MY LOVE OF MOVIES began
when I was a teenager. I watched every
John Hughes film, but The Breakfast
Club was my favourite. I loved Ferris
Bueller’s Day Off and Say Anything.
Dazed And Confused was another
important one for me; I was drawn to
the energy of that big ensemble. It
was so different from my life and my
environment, and the music was great.
And then there was Clueless,
which was such a big part of my
adolescence. It’s exotic and yet universal.
It’s iconic and aspirational. I hadn’t seen
anything like it before. It’s a film about
a woman really taking control; it wasn’t
about her trying to be loved by a man.
I remember watching it for the first
time in my friend’s basement, stretched
out on her couch. She had one of those
cool set-ups with a really big screen.
We started the film sitting down, and
ended the film jumping around the
room together, literally not being able
to contain our physical excitement about
this film and what it was doing to us. We
felt transformed.
These movies are a celebration of
independence, and I think that’s what got
me so excited to be young and watching
them, and as an older person it makes me
feel nostalgic for that time. This is why we
didn’t really focus on the grown-up
