OBITUARIES

Pierre DELAUNAY (1919-2019)
UEFA’s second general-secretary from
1956 to 1959 – succeeding his father,
Henri Delaunay – the Frenchman
oversaw the start of the European
Nations Cup, which would later
become the European Championship.
He had also succeeded his father as
general-secretary of the French
Football Federation.

Jacques FERRAN (1920-2019)
One of the L’Equipe journalists
who came up with the idea and
the original format for the European
Cup, he also served as Editor of
France Football magazine.

Eric HARRISON (1938-2019)
The former Manchester United youth
coach credited with developing the
“class of ’92” and leading the club
to FA Youth Cup victories in 1992
and 1995. He played for Halifax Town,
Hartlepools United, Barrow, Southport
and Scarborough, and was awarded
an MBE in 2017.

Peter MIKKELSEN (1960-2019)
Danish referee who took charge of
five World Cup games – two in Italy in
1990 and three in the USA in 1994


  • and also took part in the 1992
    European Championship in Sweden
    and the 1996 Euros in England. Was


the winner of the World Referee of the
Year Award in 1991 and 1993, and was
later a UEFA referee observer and a
member of the FIFA Referees Committee
for many years.

Ndaye MULAMBA (1948-2019)
Scored a record nine goals for Zaire as
they won the 1974 African Nations Cup
and captained his country at that year’s
World Cup finals – where he was sent off
against Yugoslavia in a case of mistaken
identity. Nicknamed
“Mutumbula”
(the assassin),
he won the 1973
African Cup of
Champions Clubs
with AS Vita Club.

Taiwo
OGUNJOBI
(1953-2019)
Nigerian
international defender and captain of
the Shooting Stars team that reached
the Final of the 1984 Africa Cup of
Champions Clubs. He later served as
secretary-general of his country’s FA and
was twice a Nigerian Football Federation
presidential candidate.

Emiliano SALA (1980-2019)
The Argentinian striker died when
a plane carrying him from France to
Wales crashed into the English Channel.

1966 but it was more than that. Even
though I was on the pitch, and have seen
it many times since, I still don’t know how
he saved that header from Pele.”
Hurst tweeted: “One of the very
greatest. Thinking especially of Ursula,
Julia, Wendy and Robert. Sad for football,
Stoke City and for England fans.”
Ex-England keeper Peter Shilton, who
replaced Banks at Leicester, tweeted: “I’m
devastated – today I’ve lost my hero.”
Banks was appointed club president by
Stoke in 2002 and a statue of a smiling
Banks holding the Jules Rimet trophy
aloft was unveiled at the ground in 2008
