LOEWE
It was all about the art of basketry at Loewe, whose fifth chapter at Salone del
Mobile featured a series of objets d’art revolving around it, as well as hand-quilting
and calligraphy by 10 artisans from all corners of the world. Described as “the
most ambitious instalment for 2019”, Loewe Baskets is possibly the most unique
batch of creations assembled by the Spanish brand to date. The bamboo basket by
Jiro Yonezawa from Japan; woven containers by Design Afrika (South Africa); and
homegrown willow baskets by Joe Hogan (Ireland) were among the scene-stealers.
In addition to these limited-edition works of art, Loewe also recruited Spanish and
Italian artisans to design a collection of leather accessories according to the theme.
Idoia Cuesta exercised her “chaos technique” of weaving on leather bags, while the As
Radeiras ladies adopted the traditional fishing knot and netting techniques to produce
their assortment of charms, and Álvaro Leiro’s experience in crafting complex basketry
from reed and natural fibres was put to good use in creating intricately woven leather
purses.
