The Marie Bag

by Bottega Veneta

Daniel Lee debuts a new bag that champions quiet
design enriched with precious techniques.
BY JEFFREY YAN

For his first full collection at Bottega Veneta, Daniel Lee set
about expanding the repertoire of the Italian house by including
pieces that deliberately move away from the brand’s signature
Intrecciato woven motif. One of the highlights from his Pre-Fall ’19
collection is the Marie—a square shoulder bag in either suede
or nappa composed of clean, precise lines and accented with
luxuriously subtle touches befitting a brand whose motto is
“when your own initials are enough”.

Most of the bags Lee designed this season sport hardware

unique to their particular styles. For the Marie, he was inspired
by the decorative brass elements that old Milanese nobility
used to have in their grand palazzos. Here, the brass is turned
into gilded, engraved casings on the shoulder strap that snap
open to allow adjustability. The clasp also features the same
engravings and opens via push buttons on the sides—all details
lifted from the rich world of haute horlogerie and its guilloche
technique. The clasp alone is made of 19 individual pieces
and takes the Bottega Veneta artisans more than two days to
hand-assemble.
