PETTIBON
Three runway shows in, Kim Jones has
established a signature for his Dior Men
—a collaboration with a major artist as
each season’s centerpiece. After all,
Christian Dior himself was famously a
gallerist before he became a couturier.
Jones’ debut season saw a partnership
with American artist KAWS, and
then came the Pre-Fall spectacular
with Hajime Sorayama. This season,
Jones chose as his partner in crime
Raymond Pettibon, the graphic artist
who emerged from Southern California
punk culture and gained prominence
for his stylised ink drawings that
bring together imagery and text in the
styles of Pop Art, comic books and DIY
fanzines, all while blending history, pop
culture and social commentary. For Dior
Men, Jones drew on Pettibon’s animal
prints, which were then applied with
haute couture techniques on his softly
elegant menswear.
