In conjunction with their latest breakthrough in the Science of
Light—The Equation Of Light, Decoded, La Prairie uncovers
the relationship between beauty and light through a special
artistic collaboration with South Korean artist Chul-Huyn
Ahn. A recognised figure in the world of Optical and Light
Art, Ahn explains how he uses as light to create three unique
pieces for the brand that capture the fundamental properties
of luminosity, colour and reflection.
What is the idea behind your three works for La Prairie?
What inspired you to create Transparency, 4 Dots, Light
Drawing?
The first time I opened a White Caviar product, I was so
impressed by the product’s very clean and sleek aesthetic.
It inspired me to design Transparency. 4 Dots is from my
ongoing series of dots this time highlighting the colours of
the scientific story behind La Prairie’s The Equation of Light.
Light Drawing utilises light to evoke the three-dimensional
arrangement of atoms that constitute a molecule. Simple
lines and points mimic the magnified structures. Basic
shapes create a complex space of repetition that imitates
the complex matrix of molecular bonds in all matter. Starting
with the science of light, I utilise reflection and luminosity
to depict the beauty of the most basic building blocks of the
universe.
How would you describe each piece in three words?
Transparency: light, reflection, discovery; 4 Dots: colour, science,
beauty; Light Drawing: structure, creating, complexity.
How do they relate to light, science and reflection?
All of the works utilise light as a material, in conjunction with
the mirror. These simple materials relate to the complexity
of beauty and its enhancement through understanding the
constituent parts of light. I want to use these well-known
materials to discover what is not so simple to say, what I can
say better in the form of the work. Light, science and reflection
are not just words; they are processes and materials that can
help to discover beauty.
White Caviar pays tribute to the Science of Light. How
does this relate to your work as an artist?
White Caviar pays tribute to the Science of Light in its decoding
of light as the combination of colour and reflection. In the same
way, my work utilises light and mirrors as materials, which
combine to reveal beauty and complexity.
