Hinako Shibuno of Japan fin-
ished with a birdie to win the
Women’s British Open by one shot
over Lizette Salas on Sunday as
she wrapped up a stunning major
championship debut in Milton
Keynes, E ngland.
The 20-year-old Shibuno, a
rookie on the Japan LPGA To ur
who was playing for the first time
outside o f her c ountry, b irdied five
of the final nine holes in a 4-under-
par 6 8 and 18-under 270 overall.
“I was also thinking about if I
were to make this putt, how I was
going to celebrate,” Shibuno said
of approaching the 18th. “Eat a lot
of sweets.”
Largely unknown before the
championship, Shibuno — nick-
named “Smiling Cinderella” —
started Sunday with a two-stroke
lead but lost i t with a double bogey

on the par-4 third. She bounced
back with birdies o n Nos. 5 and 7 a t
Woburn Golf C lub.
But in three of four rounds,
Shibuno shined on the back nine.
She did it in 31 on Sunday — and
just 30 o n Thursday and Saturday.
“Now that I’ve w on, I think a lot
of the Japanese people will know
me, but in actuality, I just wanted
to live a quiet life,” S hibuno s aid.
“I was looking online, and I did
see that it’s been 42 years since a
Japanese player has last won. I do
feel that I have accomplished
something great, but I really don’t
know the reason w hy I was able to
accomplish it.”
Salas, who started the final
round tied for fourth, quickly
played herself into contention
with three birdies in the first four
holes and added five more in a
7-under 65.
But the American will regret

not taking another birdie chance
on the 18th when she shared the
lead with Shibuno.
“I told myself: ‘You got this.
You’re made for this.’ I put a good
stroke on it. I’m not going to lie, I
was nervous,” Salas said after her
best finish a t a major. “ You know, I
haven’t been in that position in a
long time. Gave it a good stroke. I
controlled all my thoughts. It just
didn’t drop.”
l PGA TOUR : J.T. Poston won
the Wyndham Championship for
his first tour title, shooting an
8-under 62 for a one-stroke victory
in Greensboro, N.C.
Poston tied Henrik Stenson’s
two-year-old tournament record at
22-under 258. He became the first
player since Lee Trevino in 1974 to
win a 72-hole stroke-play event on
tour without any bogeys or worse.
The native N orth C arolinian be-
gan three back, took the lead for

good with a birdie on the par-5
15th, then finished with three
straight pars to earn $1,116,000
and 500 FedEx Cup points at the
regular s eason finale.
Webb Simpson was at 21 under
after a 65. Byeong Hun An, who
held or shared the lead after each
of the first three rounds, three-
putted the 18th for a bogey and a
67 to finish two shots back. Tr ying
to force a playoff with a birdie, he
nearly holed a 60-footer b ut had it
run well p ast.
Poston, a former Western Caro-
lina golfer playing a 100-mile drive
from his hometown of Hickory,
became the t hird player i n 11 years
with strong local ties to win at
Sedgefield Country Club. He
joined 2 008 winner Carl Petterson
— a Swede w ho grew up in Greens-
boro — and 2011 champion Webb
Simpson, a Raleigh native who
played c ollege g olf a t Wake Forest.

BY JOHN KEKIS

watkins glen, n.y. — Chase
Elliott put an emphatic end to his
summerlong struggles, making a
statement with a dominating win
on the road course at Watkins
Glen International.
A year after racing to his first
career NASCAR Cup Series victo-
ry at the Glen, Elliott won a sec-
ond time for Hendrick Motor-
sports on Sunday, besting Martin
Truex Jr. just as he did a year ago.
Elliott, who started from the pole,
led 80 of 90 laps around the
speedy 2.45-mile layout to become
the first repeat winner in nearly a
decade, since Marcos Ambrose in
2011 and 2012.
“I think it’s huge,” Elliott said.
“We’ve had fast cars at times, but
one thing or another ended up for
a bad weekend. The way we did it
was the biggest thing. That’s the
kind of effort you have to put on
often to compete with the guys in
the field.”
Elliott already had qualified for
the postseason with his win at
Ta lladega Superspeedway in May,
but after f our straight t op-fives he
hadn’t had a top-10 finish in the
No. 9 Chevrolet since June, a span
of seven races. He a lso led 400 laps
in the opening 13 races but only
nine laps since until Sunday.
It was a two-car race for more
than half the 220.5-mile distance
and the entire final 40 laps.
Truex began to exert pressure
after sitting behind Elliott for
more than 10 laps in the final
segment. Elliott held his ground
until Truex’s No. 19 Joe Gibbs
Racing To yota closed in with six
laps to go, waiting to pounce on a
mistake that never came.
“I tried to do all I could,” Truex
said. “Chase did an excellent job
just not making mistakes. He hit
his marks. His car was really fast
in the key areas that you need to
be. I just couldn’t g et a run on him.
“Really, it was all about restarts
and track position. If I could have
just got by him o n that last one, we
could have set sail.”
Elliott won by 0.454 seconds.
Denny Hamlin was third and
Erik Jones fourth for Gibbs, and
Ryan Blaney was fifth for Penske
Racing after starting from the
rear of the field.
Truex was chasing a sweep of
the two traditional road races on
the schedule. He won at Sonoma
Raceway in June for the second
straight time and has five straight
top-two finishes on road courses.
He challenged Elliott right off
the green flag on a restart on lap
66, with the two exchanging
bumps w hile speeding up through
the esses. But Elliott never relin-
quished the lead despite damage
to the left rear of his Chevy.
“I think the left rear damage
was the biggest concern,” crew
chief Alan Gustafson said. “It was
pretty significant. There’s n othing
you can do. There’s no reason to
panic. We’d done the best job we
could. I knew it was up to Chase.
Chase was going to have to run a
perfect race, and he did.”
The race was stopped o n Lap 62
when Jimmie Johnson, desperate
for a good finish, spun out coming
out of the carousel turn and then
Bubba Wallace spun Kyle Busch,
who was running 10th.
Busch and Wallace had made
contact while racing down the
front s traightaway b efore Wallace
had the last tap, sending Busch’s
Joe Gibbs Racing To yota around
entering the first turn. Busch fin-
ished 11th.
