at Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.—
Make it two in a rowfor
Chase Elliott at Watkins Glen
International.
A yearafter racing to his
first NASCARCup victory at
The Glen,Elliott wona sec-
ond timein the No. 9 for Hen-
drickMotorsports, besting
Martin Truex Jr. just as he did
The Glenhadn’t had a re-
peat winnerin nearly a de-
cade,sinceMarcos Ambrose
in 2011and 2012.
‘‘I think it’s huge,’’ Elliott
said. ‘‘We've had fast cars at
times, but one thingor anoth-
er ended up for a bad week-
end.The way we did it was
the biggest thing. That’s the
kindof effort you have to put
on often to compete with the
guys in the field.’’
It was a two-car race for
morethanhalf the 220.5-mile
distanceand the entirefinal
40 lapsaroundthe high-
speed2.45-milenatural ter-
rain layout.
Truex began to exert some
pressure after sitting behind
Elliott for morethan 10 laps
in the final segment.
Elliott held his ground un-
til Truex’s No 19 Joe Gibbs
Racing Toyota closedwithsix
laps to go, waiting to capital-
ize on a mistake that never
came.
With two laps left, Truex
still couldn’t get closeenough
to make a move as Elliott
droveflawlessly, winningby
0.454 seconds.
‘‘I triedto do all I could,’’
Truex said. “Chase did an ex-
cellent job just not making
mistakes. He hit his marks.
His car was really fast in the
key areasthat you needto be.
I just couldn’t get a run on
him.
‘‘Really, it was all aboutre-
starts and track position.‘If I
couldhave just got by him on
that last one we couldhave

setsail.’’
Elliott, the pole-sitter, led
80 of 90 laps and snapped a
long slump.
Denny Hamlinwas third,
ErikJones fourth for Gibbs,
and Ryan Blaney fifth in his
No. 22 Penske Racing Ford af-
ter starting fromthe rear of
the field.
Seven-time champion Jim-
my Johnson finished 19th as
he struggles to make the play-
offs.
Truex was chasinga sweep
of the two traditionalroad
races on the schedule.He won
at Sonoma in June for the sec-
ond straight time and has five
straight top-two finisheson
road courses.
Elliott wonthe first two
stages, dominating the first,
and Truex moved into conten-
tion abouta third of the way
throughthe race. Truex began
to challenge Elliott for the
lead entering the first turn on
Lap 55, moving briefly inside
on the 90-degree,downhill
right-hander, but backed off
to wait for anothershot.
They were aloneat the
front of the field,12 seconds
ahead,whenElliott divedto
pit roadon Lap 60 for his fi-
nal stop. Truex followedsuit
the next time around and was
back behind Elliott, a bit far-
ther backthis time.
Truex stayed back but like
last yearbeganto closethe
gap with20 laps left.
Elliott, whoovercame
some mistakes in the closing
lapsa year ago that nearly
openedthe doorfor Truex,
maintained a steadyleadof
just a few car lengths for al-
most the entire stage.
The race was stopped
when Johnson, desperate for
a good finish to keep his play-
off hopesalive, spun out com-
ing out of the carouselturn, a
sweepingrighthander.
Seconds later BubbaWal-
lacespunKyle Busch,who
was running10th on Lap 62.
