SET DESIGN: SAMUEL PIDGEN WRITERS: LAURA HAWKINS, ELLIE STATHAKI

From a papal tiara-inspired minaudière and cherub-

motif jewellery to embellished halos, there was

a definite ecclesiastical air to Dolce & Gabbana’s

A/W18 accessories. But it is the Italian fashion brand’s

‘Devotion’ bag that has given us a real spiritual

awakening. Its antique-bronze sacred heart detail

has been clad in 24ct gold leaf and is made using

a lost-wax casting technique, often associated with

jewellery making. This metalwork technique sees

the bag’s clasp first carved in wax and surrounded

by a mould, before molten brass is poured into

the cast. The heart is then finished with a border

of curling leaves, and is framed with ray-of-light

quilted stitching. We’ll be stowing our opera glasses

inside on our next musical outing.
