The fall of 2018 was particularly
grueling. Quilt National, Fiberart
International, Excellence in Fibers,
and IQF Houston all seemed to
have overlapping entry dates and
exhibition timelines. If you make
work on a consistent basis for
exhibition, as I do, there was pause.
Who gets what you consider ‘your
best’? Who gets the ‘seconds’?
And, as my adult son—who has
witnessed me riding way too many
roller coaster rides—observed,
possibly I don’t know what my best
work actually is. Certainly judging
from what he has chosen to hang
in his home from a lucrative stash,

aah, the roller coaster of the juried exhibition! You sit,
strapped down in your seat as the car clanks its way to
the top, hopes building, anticipating the notifi cation date.
Then obsessively checking emails and within a heartbeat,
there it is, the downhill of the coaster ... wheeee!! You scream
and shout, either in delight or dismay. It’s either the best ride
ever or you’ll never ride it again. But either way, one day, that
call for entry will pop up in your inbox and, once again, the
ticket price will be paid for just one more ride.
