“Squirrel Aloft”
CARLA A. WHITE • SOUTH BURLINGTON, VERMONT • 25" x 32"
“A lone Red Squirrel in Scotland soars through the air as it leaps from one branch to another. Scotland’s Red Squirrels are
threatened by a virus called squirrel pox which has been brought into the country by non-symptomatic Grey Squirrels.
Methods to keep down infection include humane trapping and removal of the Grey Squirrels, refraining from feeding local
wildlife, and thoroughly cleaning wildlife feeders. Infected Red Squirrels typically die within 2 weeks of contracting the disease.
This quilt was made to commemorate the fight for the survival of Scotland’s Red Squirrel. The original photograph was used by
permission from Neil McIntyre, Nature and Landscape Photography Tours (www.neilmcintyre.com).”
