Caring for the Stencil
When a painting session is fi nished, blot the stencil between dry paper towels.
Never use water.
If you want to change paint colors in the same printing session, clean the stencil
as above before switching to the diff erent color paint.
Store the stencil fl at.
With repeated use, the stencil will pick up paint color
but will still work the same.

- Gently fold the stencil material
in half—trying not to crease it
too hard—enough for it to pass
inside the throat of the one-
hole punch. (fi gure 1) Punch
holes at different distances
and change their size if you
have a second, different-sized,
one-hole punch. Cover the
center of the stencil material—
unfolding and refolding, as
needed—with holes. Leave
1 ½ " on all 4 sides without any
punched holes. Flatten the
stencil with your hands.
- Cover the edges of the stencil
with duct tape. (fi gure 2) This
will stabilize the stencil and
make it easier to handle.
Print with the stencil
- Position the fabric for
stenciling on the padded
printing surface. Place the
stencil, right side up, on top of
the fabric. Pour a small amount
of fabric paint near a taped
edge. Use one hand to stabilize
the stencil and hold it in place.
With your other hand, use an
old credit card to pull the paint
over the stencil. Gently remove
the stencil and move it to
another position on the fabric.
Continue covering the fabric in
this manner. (fi gure 3) Let the
paint dry completely.
- With a dry iron, heat set
the paint following the
manufacturer’s directions.
Voilà, you have created your
own polka dot cloth!
