Quilting Arts - USA (2019-12 & 2020-01)

(Antfer) #1
Dear Quilting Arts,
“Why didn’t I start this sooner?” I am always bemoaning to my
daughters. I have sewn throughout my life, but I have been quilting
for only a little over three years—and I am now 82 years old!
When I fi rst saw Quilters Newsletter magazine in a fabric shop I
immediately subscribed. Th en one day I got a notice that Quilters
Newsletter was closing and Quilting Arts would take its place.
I was pretty upset ... until I got my fi rst issue. Oh my, oh my! Th e
quilting world opened up to me. I never would have believed the
possibilities of “quilt art” without Quilting Arts. I just didn’t know
that those kinds of things could be done, and that incredible artists
were willing to share their work and their techniques.
I have been thinking about the creative process for a long time.
I have been a professional musician in the Utah Symphony and
I sang in the Tabernacle Choir. I have written two books and
illustrated professionally for a children’s magazine. Anyone who has
a talent—be it in music, art, or literature—knows that it is there. It
nags away at you, wanting to come out and be expressed. You live
with it always; initiating ideas and feelings that are so exciting you
sometimes shiver with delight. Oh, but the rewards that are yours
because of it.
I can’t wait until I get the next issue of Quilting Arts. Th ere is
no question that the pictures, techniques, and philosophy of a
featured artist are stored in my brain and pop forward when I need
them. I am proud to own your magazines. I’ve had such a richly
blessed life and it would be nice if others could recognize what
their talents can do for them, also.
Don’t wait, start creating! Th is old lady is pretty happy right now.

Dear Quilting Arts ,
I just completed a quilt using the Facets Diamond panel and
yardage by MJ Kinman (MJ was featured in the June/July issue)
along with other designs. I quilted it myself on my longarm. I
love how it came out!
Kudos to MJ Kinman on such a wonderful design. As a former
silversmith/lapidarist, I certainly appreciate her accuracy and
attention to detail in the faceting replication! Th ank you for a
great article—I fi nd something new to learn in every issue of
Quilting Arts whether in print or via other media.
