The arch has lately become the design meme
du jour, backing chairs, supporting tables and
holding fronds. There’s barely a sconce, pendant,
shelving bracket or mirror currently escaping
the treatment. Bridging chasms, rounding out
rigid lines, circular thinking... there’s no doubt
a socio-political reading to be found in this
dominant device. But whatever the motivations,
the majestic Roman arch is obvious in its origins,
and loops back to more recent moments in
design history such as the Memphis era. We’ve
gathered some of our favourite examples.
