Jewellery designs for the fast lane
For Paris-based jewellery designer Annelise Michelson,
the shiny gloss of industrial car-spray palettes has
long been a source of joy. ‘It’s the energy that these
colours express. They make everything feel exciting,
like a fast sports car,’ she says, pondering the ainity
for vivid coated metal in her own designs. The
high-shine melange of purple and icy blue that
spills across her new ‘Sea Leaves’ earrings, however,
take their tangled tones from another automotive
inspiration. ‘I wanted their brightness to have a strange
impact, like car oil mixing with water on the road.’
Barcelona-based jewellery label Gaviria also revels in
industrial metal inluences. Its bright, powder-coated,
primary-coloured designs have a sparky character that
tugs on unnoticeable, everyday details, such as the
undulations of a car grille. Swiss high jeweller Suzanne
Syz, meanwhile, is a master at confusing industrial
materials with precious ones. The fruity red aluminium
that makes her diamond-speckled ‘Hello It’s Me’ hoops
so easy to wear was created by the same workshop
that colours the wings and tails of the Airbus A380.
