match, one that architects have
exploited ever since béton brut became
the modernist’s material of choice. It’s
a curiously symbiotic relationship of
contrasts that Estudio Galera’s latest
single-family house, on Argentina’s pine
tree-illed Pinamar coast, makes the
most of. Estudio Galera designed the
brutalist Casa AYYA to take advantage
of the region’s mild temperatures and
to accommodate the owners’ busy
social life. The house, which embodies
the Cariló-based practice’s exposed-
structure approach, is arranged in an
L-shaped loorplan that turns its back
to the street and focuses on the terrace
and swimming pool at its heart. This
is the best spot to admire the retreat’s
dramatic, monolithic shapes set against
the surrounding foliage. The structure’s
ground level merges the main living
spaces with the outdoors through
expansive operable glazing; upstairs
are four bedrooms, cantilevered over
an external lounge area, perfect for
alfresco gatherings when the party
needs protecting from the elements.
