I love different genres of music and

listening to music helps me

concentrate on what needs to be

completed for a task. If I’m checking

through a large number of images or

documents, I listen to music with a lot of

bass and a good beat, which provides a

relaxed atmosphere, especially when I

have earphones in and I’m deeply

immersed in my work. When I have

intense reading to do, I prefer mellow

instrumental music. If I’m doing complex

work such as editing, silence is golden!

I like a lot of music and choose it to suit the task.
My day-to-day playlist is called ‘Liljupiterr’ (after
my favourite Instagram account), which features a lot
of SoundCloud rappers, new hits from artists like A$ap
Rocky and Travis Scott. Rap and hip-hop are my go-to
nowadays in the studio. If I need that extra juice and
the ‘DEADLINES ARE COMIN’, I’ll hit up Slipknot and
some Bring Me The Horizon to tap into my frenzied side
to hit those deadlines. If I’m rolling out some artwork or
something repetitive, I slap on the gods of the
synthesiser: Kraftwerk, along with an accompaniment
of Daft Punk and Gesaffelstein.

We’re a fast-paced studio so the music is usually a bit more uptempo in
nature but it really does depend on the brief/stage of the project. Todd Terje,
George FitzGerald, Floating Points: these are always great choices when it comes
to branding projects, especially where there is a tight deadline or during the idea
generation stage when you need your mind to work quickly. For less frantic
periods or where the deadline is a little more relaxed, we’ll usually listen to
something with more of a melody – Foals, Bloc Party and Arctic Monkeys are
always regulars on the playlist.

When designing or illustrating
there isn’t anything specific I
listen to. However, I usually find
something that provokes emotion in
me: songs that remind me of past
experiences or inspire things I want to
happen and I channel that into what I
am creating. I think these are usually
important for unlocking creativity,
which is important when you are
designing or illustrating. I find music
has a huge power and is something
that is important to me when it comes
to tackling daily design tasks.
