Whether you shoot with or without mirrors, Canon comes out on top

or performance, handling and quality,

the new Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM is

the best portrait lens for Canon EOS

full-frame cameras. But it’s £2799 for a portrait

lens, and it doesn’t work with DSLRs, only the

mirrorless EOS R and RP. For around half the

price, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is

almost as fabulous, while adding the benefit of

IS. If you don’t want IS, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4

DG HSM Art delivers lovely image quality and is

cheaper than the Canon f/1.4. The Tamron is

also a great choice – it creates lush bokeh,

despite its f/1.8 aperture, it also puts

stabilization back in. On a budget, try the Canon

EF 85mm f/1.8 USM for DSLRs, or the Samyang

MF 85mm f/1.4 RF for R-series mirrorless.
