SHOOT LIKE A PRO WITH AN ND GRAD
Despite shooting at the coast, where much
of the horizon is perfectly straight, the headlands
at either side of the frame meant a medium grad
was the best choice here. This filter has avoided
darkening the land, which is what a hard grad
would have done. In addition, a polarizing filter
was used to remove the glare from the surface
of the water. Even though this is a low-light shot,
glare was still an issue from the setting sun that’s
just out of shot.

USING GRADS TO
BALANCE EXPOSURE
For a balanced exposure, take
a meter reading of the foreground
and another of the sky: the
difference in stops between
them is the strength you’ll need.
Experience removes this step,
and some photographers prefer
underexposing the sky more to
help add drama. Like everything
in photography, it comes down
