the equator, making it deeply
tropical and humid. An
outpost of the Indian Ocean,
southern Sri Lanka is a lush
landscape causing my lenses
to fog up regularly, so I was
constantly needing to wipe my
lenses to get a clear picture.
When we took a boat trip to
see blue whales I was faced
with shooting from a boat that
would often jerk and jostle you
around as it moved. Keeping a
heavy telephoto lens steady
enough to avoid camera-shake
was easier said than done.
Sturdier ground back on
the mainland wasn’t challenge
free either... The rapidly
changing tide on the beaches
meant we had to be careful,
and it was a challenge to shoot
long exposures on such a
precarious surface. One of my
favourite pictures is of a

they’ll sit on at high tide and

striking focal point and I love
the twilight colours behind it.
Once we returned to
Colorado I sat down at my
computer and began loading
the thousands of photos into
Adobe Lightroom which is my
go-to editing software. I try
my best to make as few
adjustments as possible to
keep a sense of realism, but I
do adjust the highlights, white
balance and apply a little bit of
noise reduction.
The places we visited, and
the people we met, some of
who we remain in contact
with, are now in our hearts.
We stand with Sri Lanka and
we will return.
Nick^ has^ certainly^ captured^ a^
wide variety^ of^ images^ that^ tell^
the^ story^ of^ his^ time^ spent^ in^ Sri^
Lanka.^ We^ love^ that^ he^ made^ full^
use of^ his^ time^ in^ this^ photogenic^
part^ of^ the^ world.
His^ shooting^ techniques^ look^
spot-on,^ as^ he’s^ ensured^ the^
focal^ point^ is^ in^ focus^ and^ used^
speeds^ fast^ enough^ to^ clear^
shake.^ His^ exposures^ are^ also^
good,^ with^ no^ parts^ of^ his^
shots^ clipping^ out^ to^ pure^ black^
or white^ –^ no^ mean^ feat^ in^
sunny^ tropical^ conditions.
