PROJECT INFO

Unfinnished business

Finnish nature photographer Pertti has been documenting his
homeland for the last 45 years and doesn’t plan on stopping soon

live in Finland, about
ten miles from the city
centre of Helsinki,
and have
photographed the
surrounding nature and
landscapes for the last 45
years. Inside the city there’s a
nature reserve called Uutela
which I regularly shoot at and
is good for pictures of forests
and the coastline. I retired ten
years ago, so I have more time

for this hobby of mine.
Whitetail goose and
cormorant now both nest
regularly in the city, but were
a very rare sight 20 years ago,
while I’ve seen widgeon
numbers plummet.
I shoot in the Raw on my
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and
7D Mark II, and can spend
hours editing my images in
Lightroom and Photoshop
Elements. But I always try to
keep my edits to a minimum
to make the images look as
natural as possible.
If you want shots of a
sunrise in June in Helsinki,
you have to get up at about

3am to be there with good
time to set up. I don’t usually
plan my trips beforehand, my
experience tells me what to
do, but if there’s something
special you want, you should
plan. I took my winter sunrise
image in January. You get the
special red effect when there’s
snow on the ground and the
sea is still free from ice, while
a high aperture of f/16 gives

Many of my pictures,
however, are pure chance
with no planning. I just sit and
wait for something to happen.
Like the osprey. It wasn’t
