CANON has revealed its new
RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
lens – a short telephoto zoom
ideal for sports, portraits and
wildlife, boasting the next
generation of autofocusing
technology. It’s remarkably
compact at 70mm with a
telescopic design that makes it
27% shorter and 28% lighter
than the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L.
Keen to build up the lenses
for the RF range, Canon’s new
70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM sits
alongside the 15-35mm and
24-70mm lenses (see page
98), all of which boast fast
f/2.8 apertures, Image
Stabilisation and an Ultrasonic
Motor, completing the ‘holy
trinity’ of lenses for Canon’s
full-frame mirrorless systems.
Autofocus is reported to be
significantly improved by
taking on Canon’s latest Nano
USM technology to move the
glass autofocusing elements
inside the lens barrel. This is
the first time Canon’s used
Dual Nano USM – meaning it
takes on not one, but two Nano

USM motors, responsible for
moving different lens groups
inside the barrel, which work
together for faster and more
efficient AF.
Nano USM, paired with an
Electronic Floating Focus
system, allows the minimum
focus distance to be reduced
to just 70cm, down from 1.2m
on the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L III.
The new telephoto’s smaller
and lighter than the EF version,
weighing in at 1070g compared
to the 1480g. When at its
shortest focal length of 70mm
it has a length of 146mm,
compared to 199mm on the EF
DSLR lens. It does, however,
extend to a similar length as
the EF 70-200mm at its
maximum zoom of 200mm.
The lens has a construction
of 17 elements in 3 groups, and
a Subwavelength Structure
Coating: nanometer size
structures on the surface of
the lens designed to suppress
reflections and reduce flare.
Weather sealing comes as
standard, plus a perforated
seal has been added to the
moving inner barrel to allow air
in but keep dust out.
