SUMMER 2019 MOVIEMAKER.COM
ILLER LOOKS and a “never
say die” spirit reigned supreme
at the 72nd annual Cannes
Film Festival, May 14-25,
- Setting that tone, the
famed fest paid homage to French New Wave
pioneer Agnès Varda—who passed away
in March 2019—immortalizing an image
of the director shooting her 1955 debut
feature La Pointe Courte on Cannes 2019’s
official poster. Once underway, an opening
night premiere of Jim Jarmusch’s colossally
cast zombie comedy, The Dead Don’t Die,
injected new life into a genre nearly run
ragged. And at the end of the 11-day event,
Asian auteur Bong Joon-ho emerged as
the winner of the Palme d’Or for his dark-
comedic familial drama Parasite, becoming
the first Korean helmer in history to lay claim
to the honor after his previous feature Okja
unsuccessfully competed for the prize in 2017.
Of course, high fashion on the
Croisette hasn’t died either, as MovieMaker
photographer Fabrice Dall’Anese’s snapshots
of the stars on the scene remind us:
Frankie star Isabelle Huppert sparkled
against the night sky; Julianne Moore’s
(star of Luca Guadagnino’s short film
“The Staggering Girl”) emerald ensemble
popped amidst coastal palms; and
Christoph Waltz oozed elegance in a timeless
tux en route to the in-competition premiere
of Justine Triet’s Sibyl. These killer looks
are the visual embodiment of the stylish and
soulful cinematic slate that Cannes has kept
alive and thriving for yet another year.
