NOTIONS Rust-proof pins; yarn
needle.
GAUGE 9 hdc and 7 ch-1 sps and 8
rows = 4" with smaller hook in patt.

—Long chain 1 and half double crochet
in first stitch will create a straighter
edge for this project. Beginning
chain 1 does not count as a stitch
throughout.

—When making chain-loops, make sure
loops retain width mentioned in stitch
guide to avoid scarf shrinkage.

STITCH GUIDE
Chain-loop (ch-lp): Lp equal to width of
3 hdc.

Surface chain (surface ch): Sk next
2 hdc, insert hook from front to back in
next ch-1 sp, yo, pull up lp, draw through
lp on hook, pull up ch-lp.

Surface turning chains (surface turn):
Insert hook bet last 2 sts, yo, pull up lp,
draw through lp on hook, pull up ch-lp,
insert hook from front to back bet first 2
hdc 1 row below, yo, pull up ch-lp.

SCARF
With smaller hook and MC, ch 296. Row 1:
(RS) Working in back ridge lps, hdc in 3rd
ch from hook (skipped ch count as first
st), [ch 1, sk next ch, hdc next ch] across
to last ch, hdc in last ch, turn—149 hdc.
Row 2: Pull up lp to height of hdc (counts
as ch 1 throughout), hdc flo in first st (see
Notes), hdc flo in next st, [ch 1, sk next
ch-1 sp, hdc flo in next st] across to last st,
hdc flo in last st, turn. Row 3: Pull up lp to
height of hdc, hdc blo in first st, hdc blo
in next st, [ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, hdc blo
in next st] across to last st, hdc in last st,
turn. Rows 4–11: Rep Rows 2–3 four times.
Fasten off at end of last row.

FINISHING
Weave in ends. Block.

Surface crochet embroidery
With larger hook and CC, with RS of scarf
facing and working horizontally (long-
ways) across scarf, insert hook from front
to back bet first 2 hdc on last row, yo, pull
up ch-lp (see Stitch Guide) *[surface ch
(see Stitch Guide)] across to last 2 sts**,
surface turn (see Stitch Guide); rep from *
11 times, ending last rep at **, insert hook
between last 2 sts, yo, pull up lp, draw
through lp on hook. Fasten off.
