with a Catalyst wedge silicone painting
tool that has grooves cut into one edge.
This helped to create some of the
ripples on the water, as well as staining
the paper with the wiped-off colour.
Once dry, the water was finished by
adding a few reflections and horizontal
strips of white paint for the ripples.

Foreground flowers
The sky in Gedney Tulips(left) was
painted using a mix of cobalt teal and
white, adding more white and a little
light red for the occasional cloud. The
copper roof of the church stands out
well by the addition of cobalt teal
mixed with white, and the distant
green fields were created by mixing
primary yellow and cobalt teal.
Lighter areas were made by adding
more yellow and white into the mix.
Little flashes of pure cobalt teal were
added in the distance. Accents of
cobalt teal were also applied to indicate
flower heads amongst the red tulips as
the painting progressed lower down.
Introducing black at the foot of the
painting and along the upper tree
line helped to make the other colours
stand out.
If you’d like to add cobalt teal to your
palette, why not follow my step-by-step
