Step 8
1 I changed the large house below the
church from white to blue. There was too
much white in that area and not enough
blue. The windows and a few other details
came next.
2 After adding a boat I rather liked the
emptiness of the sea and beach area
compared to the cluster of buildings behind
the sea wall. There were still window details
to finish off.
3 The cloud behind the church spire had
been forgotten. Looking at the rest of the
painting, I thought there would be enough
in the upper half without complicating
the design with a cloud.

Step 7
1 I had still only used six colours, but a brighter, paler colour was
now needed on parts of these right-hand buildings and for the highlights
on the orange rooftops, paths on the hill and the beach. I mixed a pale
orange-yellow, leaving one colour for last-minute emergencies.
2 Now the foreground and background shadows looked too similar.
I needed a weaker shade of brown for the distant shadows, but kept
the original strong brown for the foreground. Having retained some
of the original brown I mixed a little white with the rest. This meant
I now had two shades of brown so a total of eight colours.
3 The blocking-in stage was complete. I also added a few dashes of
alternative colours to indicate shadows and went over the sea with
two more coats to indicate deep and shallow water. The beach also
received further layers of orange and a couple of coats of the new
pale orange to show wet and dry sand.

Step 6
As the painting progressed, I became increasingly concerned about
the green hill. It was a good grass colour but, in relation to the rest of
the painting, rather crude and strong. Before adding any detail to the
hill, I added white to the green mix and went over the hill area again,
after I finished blocking in the buildings on the right. These were
fiddly, but made a satisfying conclusion to that edge of the picture.
