Step 7
With a dark mix of gouache, paint the balcony
railings, remembering to leave a few gaps.

t

Step 4
Paint the balcony doors with gouache, as
you want them to look solid and flat. Vary
the colour as you paint down the door,
where you think the shadows will go.

t

Step 5
1 Darken inside the room using a rich dark mix of ultramarine with burnt sienna gouache.
Although you will be painting the flowers with white gouache at the end, be careful
to preserve the paper in the areas you see here; this will make the whitest white.
2 Add a pale green-grey gouache to the stonework around the door.

t

Step 6
With a varying mixture of brown and yellow
ochre paint and sweeping brushstrokes,
paint the stems of the plants. Practise these
brushstrokes before you do them; it’s a
positive movement with the brush, slowly
lifting off to leave a nicely decreasing line.

Step 3
1 Once the wash is dry, do the same with
the wall and drop in madder lake deep,
quinacridone rose and yellow ochre. Ensure the
washes are quite thin and watery. Keep in mind
that the wall is old and weathered looking.
2 Paint the pots with a terracotta colour made
from azo yellow with a touch of vermilion.
