TASK 3Sketch at the seaside
Malcolm Coils said: ‘After drawing in pencil in over 50 A4 drawing books, I now
keep a record in an ordinary lined notebook using black ballpoint pen, showing
thumbnail sketches at A7 and various notes. These are drawn without resting
on a flat surface, which gives the drawing a certain character.’

TASK 5Sketch by a river,
under the shade of the trees
Justin Twigg said: ‘This picture is
of barges on the Seine in Paris. It
was drawn on A2 cartridge paper,
which I buy by the ream, as I find
sketchbooks often too small for
the way I like to work. I am also
guilty of having many unfinished
sketchbooks and using loose
paper I can build up a sketchbook
using an A2 portfolio of which my
collection is rapidly growing. The

TASK 4Be inspired by
mountains Sue Dalton said: ‘I
made a rough outline of this scene
at the end of a long day’s hike
above Chateau d’Oex, in the
beautiful Pays d’Enhaut in
Switzerland, where I live. I took lots
of photos to help, as I was too tired
to do much else! Using a 2B
graphite stick on fine-grain 300gsm
paper, I sketched the scene then
laid on washes in watercolour. Once
dry, I went over some of the edges
and cracks with a sharp HB pencil.
‘A scene such as this is quite
challenging when it comes to
producing an actual painting, as
there are always lots of greens,
which I struggle with. Simplifying
the colours has really helped.
‘I love these sketchbook
challenges for the incentive they
provide.’
