TASK 6Seek out a grand building to sketchLouise Garrett said: ‘This
was sketched quickly in Biro on Hot-pressed watercolour paper. I was sitting
with several sketching friends I meet up with regularly. The wonderful low
spring light made the newly restored building look a magnificent honey
colour. White paper for the water features in the adjacent City Park was
preserved by drawing with the stub of a wax candle before a loose wash of
watercolour and a few splashes for good luck.’
sketch was drawn with ink using
dipper pens and a couple of Chinese
brushes. These are fabulous, as they
are a real challenge to use. The control
I have with them is often left to fate,
and mistakes often turn into a feature
of a picture. I took the original photos
of the area and produced sketches
while I was visiting Paris a couple of
years ago.
‘I produced this drawing at the start
of the year, as winter was dragging on
into spring, and I had to draw, but
possibly inspired by the lack of
colours I saw in nature I went through
a phase of monochromatic ink
drawings. Also around that time I
watched a fantastic programme on TV
about Japanese and Chinese art that
showed beautiful expressive
examples of art. I produced over a
dozen in a short while and it really
helped me through a dull patch. It is
something I shall do over again, as it
really helps to focus on aspects of
drawing like perspective, tonal values,
drama and many others.’
