WOODSTOCK AT 50

79

THE WHO

“It was billed as an Aquarian exposition: three days of peace and music. But it was
chaos,” wrote the Who singer Roger Daltrey in his memoir. After waiting
backstage for 10 hours, “we did a two-and-a-half-hour set, including the whole of
Tommy,” Daltrey (left, with guitarist Pete Townshend) told Life. “When I hear it,
I’m obviously struggling like mad. But it made our career. We were a huge cult
band, but Woodstock cemented us to the historical map of rock and roll.”
