When Philip Glass chose Pauchi Sasaki to be
his protégé, it wasn’t to teach her how to write music.
‘It’s clear she can already do that,’ he says. ‘Instead
I thought I could help with showing her how to make
a living in the music world.’ A graduate of Mills College
in California, Sasaki has composed music for ilm,
video, dance, theatre and site-speciic installations
around the globe. ‘I was lucky to be able to spend a lot
of time with Philip on tour, from Japan to Amsterdam,
then at home in New York,’ she says. Over the year she
developed her latest piece, Gama, which she performs
in her homemade speaker dress against a projected
backdrop of digital points that resolve into a hollow
image of herself. ‘I learned so much from Philip, but the
main thing he has taught me is to live in each moment.’
