Ohad Naharin

Londiwe Khoza

Dance

South African dancer Londiwe Khoza found the initial
move to Tel Aviv to join Israeli choreographer Ohad
Naharin’s dance company very challenging. ‘Londiwe
had been trained in classical ballet,’ says Naharin, ‘so
she had a lot of things to unlearn. For a start, we have
no mirrors in our studios. Instead we teach dancers
to be aware of their bodies, connecting to their animal
instincts, learning to use gravity.’ Naharin has been the
artistic director of Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company
since 1990, having irst come to attention in the mid-
1970s, when Martha Graham chose him for a solo role.
Khoza recently won a place in Batsheva’s upcoming
season, so she’s going to be in Tel Aviv a little longer.
‘I was intrigued by her potential,’ says Naharin, ‘but
I didn’t realise how much treasure was locked away.’
