LITERATURE
Mozambican writer Mia Couto and his protégé, Brazilian
novelist Julián Fuks, have very diferent approaches to
iction. Couto, with over 30 acclaimed books to his
name, says ‘stories and words are always coming at me
and just lowing out again’. Fuks, by contrast, says he
agonises over every sentence. The two writers met up
in São Paulo, Mozambique and the Azores, the setting
for Couto’s current work in progress. ‘For the irst time
in my life I showed someone else – Julián – my irst
drafts, with all their mistakes. I was almost ashamed to
share them with him.’ The experience seems to have
intrigued both men. ‘I tried to get away from myself
and get crazier,’ Fuks says, ‘but I’ve ended up going back
to my old obsessive habits. Only now, thanks to Mia,
I’m looking at them in a very diferent way.’
