Create customhotkeys
Following on from thelast tip Isent you
aboutLeoMoon SessionGuardsoftware
(Issue 490, bit.ly /webuser490), I’ dliketo
draw attentio ntoanotherpiece of
softwar efromthe sameplace–the
excellent HotKeyzprogram (bit.ly/
hotkey491 ), which lets me create myown
Windows shortcuts.Personally,Ifind
hotkeyssavemealot of time,soh aving
the flexibilityto set them up however I
want has beeninvaluable.It’sall totally
free ,too, soy ou can create as many

shortcuts asyouneedwithout needing
to paytounlock extrafeatures.

GENERALPC
Bringback Windows Photo
Viewer
My favourit eprogramforviewingall
types of photosand imagefiles on my
computer isWindows PhotoViewer.
Youjustdouble-clickafile,ito pens in
theviewerand youcan zoom or shrink
photos, viewthem full-screen, goto the
next or previous image,and view
slideshows.Brilliant!
To associateWindows PhotoViewer
with an image type, such as ‘.jpg’, right-
click an image, select ‘Open with’ and
then ‘Choose another app’. Select
Windows PhotoViewerand tick the box
‘Always use this appto open.jpg files’.
This works fine ifyouupgraded your
computer fromWindows 7or8,but it
won’t work if youhaveaclean install of
Windows 10 oranew Windows 10 PC
becauseWindows PhotoViewerisn’t
availableinWindows 10.Instead, you’re
forced to use the MicrosoftPhotos app,
whichIdon’t like.

Theexception is ‘.tif’files,which still
open in the oldWindows PhotoViewer
when double-clicked, butyoucan’t
associateany other image type.So, if
youhaveafolder offile syou want to
browse with Windows PhotoViewerin
Windows 10,renameone fileto ‘.tif’, then
double-click it. Itopens in Windows
PhotoViewerand youcan then use the
Forwar dand Back buttonsto browse all
the otherimage file sint he folder.

SECURITY
Blockremoteaccess
If youwork foralarge company, youmay
have access to an IT de partment that
fixes problemswithyour computer–and,
with modernversions ofWindows,they
can perform thismain tenanc eremotely,
withoutyouhavingtophysically bring
your PCto them.At home,however,
you’remorelikely to fix an yPCproblems
yourself,sot here’s no needfor your
computerto be setup forremoteaccess.
I’m not sureifr emoteaccess puts your
PC at risk from malwareorhackers, but
Ithink it’s probablyagood ideato
disable it when it’s not needed.
In theControl Panel, openSystem and
then click the ‘Remotesettings’ link. Click
the Remotetab in the next windowand
clear thebox, ‘Allow RemoteAssistance
connectionsto this computer’.
