ince launching just four years ago,
Hieronymus has established a reputation for
exquisitely made contemporary notebooks
and desk accessories, so the release of its
flagship writing instrument, the ‘Sculpture’
pen, will come as great news to lovers of
analogue communication. The design
concept is succinct – a fountain pen crafted
from a single block of the finest material,
with a streamlined form that transitions
from a circle to a square. The engineering,
however, demanded years of research and
experimentation. The challenge of sculpting
a unified form, without having to weld, was
only second to that of creating a cap that
integrates a clip. Available in 925 sterling

silver since last autumn, and in gold-plated
brass from early this year, the ‘Sculpture’
pen feels substantial in the hand, and
its cap undocks with a crisp, satisfying click.
‘It’s a fountain pen for the contemporary
aesthete,’ says Hieronymus’ creative
director Thorsten Traber. ‘On request, it’s
even possible to produce the pen in solid
gold.’ Here we’ve paired the gold-plated
brass version with a newly released tray and
letter opener from the brand, crafted from
the same material with similarly minimalist
forms. Together, they provide a fine reason
to lay down our electronic devices and
revisit the joys of handwritten letters. ∂
