In 2010 Neri Oxman established The Mediated Matter Group
at the MIT Media Lab, a design studio like no other. Oxman
and her team look to move beyond the mechanics and
micro-mechanics of the Industrial and Digital Revolutions
and herald a new bio-digital era in design. The group’s
key projects, detailed on the following pages, include
post-seasonal apiaries, silkworm architecture, building
with bio-composites (thick and thin, stiff and flexible,
opaque and transparent all at the same time), living death
masks, wearables for space travellers, 3D-printed glass
architecture, swarming robot weavers and textile muscle.
They are part conceptual provocations, part real-world
technologies, practical prototyping for a future of
bio-informed design; nature not mimicked, but harnessed,
