Theendof the seasonmarkedfarewellsfor
departing drivers Nico Hülkenberg and Robert
Kubica, who each posedwith team membersfor
photographers on the grid.
Whiletop honours wentto Mercedes, Ferrari
and Red Bull this year, Carlos Sainz won ‘Class B’
by fi nishing sixth in thedrivers’ world championship.
He sealed the deal on thevery last lap of the race.
Sadly, it was a moment missedby the live coverage
of the event.
Sainz managedto overtake Hülkenberg witha
daring late-braking move at Turn 11, which netted
him tenth and the fi nal pointto ensure hefi nished
ahead of Pierre Gasly, 96 pointsto 95, in the
world championship. The hapless Hülkenberg was
also passedby his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo
immediately afterwards, leaving him 12th in his
177th and – most likely –fi nal start in F1,unless
Nico fi nds someway back in the future after being
droppedby Renault.
There was another dramatic last lap pass, also
missed on TV, at thesame corner where Sergio
Pérez nabbed seventh from Lando Norristo take
RacingPoint’s second ‘Class B’ win of the season.

Ferrari did not havethe paceto be onterms with
Mercedes in Abu Dhabi, partly dueto the nature of
the Yas Marina circuit. While its power advantage
was evident on the straights, the management of
tyre temperatures – particularly the rears – meant
the Scuderia had no answerfor Mercedes in the
fi nal sector of the lap.
Ferrari’s weakness in thissector became
apparent in qualifying when SebastianVettel spun
coming out of thefi nal turn because his rears
weren’t upto temperature. And when managing
tyres in thefi nal part of Q3,Charles Leclerc wastoo
slow, trapped behind histeam-mate, so missed the
opportunityto set a time, crossingthe fi nish line
after the red lights appeared.
There was more troublefor Leclerc on Sunday
when the FIA discovered – in a random check –his
Ferrari was carrying a smaller fuel load than the
team had declared.After the raceLeclerckept
his podium but theteam was handed a €50,000
fi ne because ofthe extra 4.88kg offuel in the car.
There have beensusp icionsover Ferrari’s fuelfl ow
usage, although atno point – despite FIAtechnical
directives – has anything beenfound to be illegal.
“This seasonour fuel has been checkedat least
ten times,” saidteam boss Mattia Binotto. “This is
not thefi rst timeand it has always been okay. But
today wegot a discrepancy.”
Checks on hisFerrari resulted in a finefor the
team butLeclerc at least retained his podium

RobertKubica was last on the road in Abu Dhabi
(two laps down in 19th)to cap off a disappointing
year for thePolish driver. The day before, George
Russell had out-qualified him 21-0to achieve the
only qualifying whitewashbetweenteam-mates
in thefi eld. Kubica will make way for F2 graduate
Nicholas Latifi in 2020, though may still retaina
presence inF1 as a reserve and simulator driver.
