McLarenpartnership begins:
Following a year using second rate
customer Ford engines in 1993,
then a disastrous works dalliance
with unreliable Peugeot units
in 1994, Ron Dennis rallies and
poaches Sauber’s factory deal
with Mercedes for 1995

The comeback:After a hiatus

of nearly 40 years, Mercedes

returns to F1 as engine supplierto

the fledgling Sauber team – first

through partner Ilmor (in 1993)

then with full factory badging in

1994 (above) – but the levels of

success enjoyed in sportscar racing

with Sauber are not replicated

Leading from the front:

The Toto Wolff of his day, Alfred

Neubauer was, from 1926 until

1955, a key figure at Mercedes.

This pioneer team boss effectively

invented pitboards, and celebrated

victories by throwing his hat under

the wheels of his winning cars

On the up after troubled start:
1995 is not a vintage year for
McLaren-Mercedes. The engine
proves unreliable and the MP4/10
slow (and infamously too small
for Nigel Mansell’s ample frame).
Second for Mika Hakkinen in Italy
is the new alliance’s first podium
