A sci-fifavourite,thespace-basedweaponhasneverquitegotoffthegroundinthe
realworld.That’snotforwantofideasthough.Peoplehaveoftenconsideredputting
laserweaponsintoorbit,eithertodestroyotherspacecraftorattacktargetson
Earth.Anotherfuturistic-soundingoptionis theelectromagneticrailgun,using
electricfieldsratherthangunpowdertoacceleratea projectile.A space-based
versioncapableofvaporisinga ballisticmissileusingshellsfiredatfourkilometres
persecondwasproposedwaybackin1986.Evenweirderis theconceptof‘kinetic
bombardment’– essentiallyanartificialmeteorstorminwhichheavytungstenrods,
irreverentlydubbed‘rodsfromGod’,wouldraindownfroma satelliteontoa
designatedtargetsuchasanairfieldorheavilydefendedbuilding.
