The Modulator is a MIDI-based effect that works by processing MIDI data, so
you can’t use it on audio tracks – it’s strictly MIDI only!

Step-by-step EQ Sweep effects with Modulator

1

Create MIDI part
To start, we need a sound to modulate, so
here’s a simple chord progression, courtesy of
Logic’s Alchemy synth. Find the MIDI file in the
Tutorial Files folder.

2

Load Channel EQ
Insert a Channel EQ plugin on the synth’s
software instrument track. This EQ will be the
eventual target of the modulation generated by
the Modulator plugin.

3

Load Modulator
Just below the Channel EQ display in the
Channel Inspector you’ll find the MIDI FX slot.
Click-hold on this and select ‘Modulator’ from
the plugin menu.

4

Turn on LFO
The plugin has two sections – an LFO
(Low Frequency Oscillator) section and an
Envelope section. We’re only using the LFO
side, so enable it with this button.

7

Set LFO rate
Enable tempo sync with this button and
set the rate to 1/8, 1/16 or 1/4 to taste and the
effect will pulse in time with your song tempo.
We’re going for 1/4 here.

5

Learn parameter
To assign a parameter, in the LFO’s lower
panel, click on the text field next to the word
‘To:’ and choose the ‘Learn Plugin Parameter’
option from the pop-up menu.

8

Trigger finger
The trigger mode dictates how the LFO
cycles respond to incoming MIDI notes. In Free
mode, the LFO ignores incoming MIDI notes
completely and doesn’t retrigger.

6

Assign high cut
In the Channel EQ’s control panel, click on
the 20000Hz value in the high frequency band.
This assigns the output of the Modulator’s LFO
to the EQ’s High Cut parameter.

9

Single or multi
In Single mode, the LFO is reset by the
first MIDI note on message it receives after
all notes are released. In Multi mode, the LFO
retriggers each time a new note is played.
