Essential Mac security tips to protect your data and

prevent malware from corrupting your files

Catalina

f you have updated your
Mac to the latest Catalina
operating system you
may have noticed how
Apple has ramped up the
security. For example,
you may have been greeted by a
prompt that appears the first time
you attempt to download a file from a
Safari website (you will need to click
‘Allow’ to download the file). Also,
Gatekeeper has been beefed up so
if you grant permission for an app to
be downloaded and installed from the
internet, it will periodically check the
apps as you run them to ensure that
no malware has been sneaked in with a
later update. And if your Mac contains

the T2 chip (which you can check by
clicking on the Apple menu and going
to About this Mac>System
Report>Controller)
you can
enable
Activation
Lock, which means
that a thief is unable to erase your Mac
and reuse it without your permission
(see ‘Tip 3’ over the page). There are
also numerous other ways to secure
your Mac and protect your data, which
we will guide you through here. Rest
assured though, Catalina is by far the
most security-conscious macOS ever,
so by updating you will have taken the
first big step to securing your Mac.
