As part of a team at Fiasco, I recently

helped the Changing Markets

Foundation produce a digital experience to

expose truths behind the farmed fishing

industry (fishingthefeed.com). With the

reach this digital platform allowed,

Changing Markets Foundation gained over

80,000 petition signatures in just over a

week. It’s important design is used for

good to promote sustainable living

practices. We have a duty as creatives to

use our skills in this way, to help make a

better world for everyone.

At Locomotive, first and foremost, we only take
on projects and clients that really matter to us.
We listen to our heart when it comes to finding the
right fit and the right project. We’ve used design for
good recently on the Editorial New variable font set,
which is free for the community to try; it’s a digital
showcase (and pro-bono project) in collaboration with
Pangram Pangram Foundry (editorialnew.com). We’ve
also worked pro bono with Design Canada, building the
online destination for a documentary film celebrating
the history of graphic design in Canada, a project we’re
really proud of (designcanada.com).

It’s a fact of life that websites get hacked. But there are many thousands of
non-techies out there who are completely unaware their site has been
compromised – perhaps even serving malware or peddling links to
pharmaceuticals or phishing sites. What I do is use search terms and operators
to bring up hacked British websites and contact them to let them know what has
happened. NHS sites, charities, schools and similar are my main focus. I never
ask for cash and often have to deal with people who are confused and
sometimes a bit angry. But it’s worth it to help people.

When I heard my local community
group had secured funding to do
something ‘creative’ for the town, I
quickly got on board. We took over an
empty shop on the high street and
developed a community art space for
exhibitions, meetups and
performances. I was entrusted with
the full brand of the space, logos,
colours, shop front, website and social-
media branding. It was time-
consuming but so satisfying to see
what a few locals can do when they
club together.
