technological campaign distributed
by DeNA of Japan, partnering with font
giant Monotype. This site isn’t mobile-
first but mobile only, delivering a
sophisticated cross-modal app
experience that marries design with
artificial intelligence. So if you visit the
link in desktop browsers, a splash page
simply provides a 2D QR code to scan on
your smartphone of choice.
From here fontgraphy requests
microphone access and prompts for
a voice recording of “Please make
my DeNA” after the countdown. The
purpose is to showcase DeNA’s ability
to analyse human voice characteristicsand use the data to match a font and
generate a ‘style’ or image. These
suggestions are then multiplied to
signify ‘design x AI’ and arrive at a final
graphical output unique to that person.
Apparently, this was accomplished
by collecting voice data from 800
DeNA employees, tagging the various
characteristics in order to let the AI
system learn the various traits.
So it’s pretty innovative stuff and a
vivid example of how this kind of tech
is finding a place online, especially tied
to the context of ecommerce. In this
case it’s for fonts but it isn’t a stretch
to see how all sorts of products could be
